OpenAI introduced in a weblog publish on Tuesday that it agreed to amass the product testing startup Statsig, and produce on its founder and CEO, Vijaye Raji, as the corporate’s CTO of Functions.

OpenAI is paying $1.1 billion for Statsig in an all-stock deal — one of many largest acquisitions ever for the ChatGPT maker — below the corporate’s present $300 billion valuation, OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wooden advised TechCrunch.

The acquisition marks OpenAI’s newest effort to construct out its Functions enterprise, helmed by the previous CEO of Instacart, Fidji Simo, who began work on the firm a number of weeks in the past. Raji will report back to Simo and can head product engineering for ChatGPT, the corporate’s AI coding instrument Codex, and future functions that OpenAI plans to construct. The corporate says that bringing Statsig’s experimentation platform in-house will speed up product growth throughout the Functions group.

As Raji comes on board, OpenAI is making adjustments to its management crew.

The corporate’s chief product officer, Kevin Weil, will grow to be VP of a brand new group known as OpenAI for Science, he introduced in a publish on LinkedIn. Weil says the purpose of his new group “is to construct the subsequent nice scientific instrument: an AI-powered platform that accelerates scientific discovery.” Weil says he’ll work carefully with Sebastien Bubeck, an OpenAI researcher and the previous VP of AI and Distinguished Scientist at Microsoft.

“I’m in a position to do that as a result of the product and design leaders at OpenAI are wonderful, and now are complemented by Fidji Simo starting her position as CEO of Functions,” mentioned Weil. “OpenAI’s merchandise have been my life since I joined, they usually’re in nice fingers.”

In the meantime, OpenAI’s present head of engineering, Srinivas Narayanan, introduced in a publish on LinkedIn that he would transition to a brand new position as the corporate’s CTO of B2B functions. Within the position, Narayanan says he’ll collaborate instantly with OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, who oversees lots of the firm’s relationships with enterprise prospects.

OpenAI says the Statsig acquisition is pending regulatory overview. As soon as accomplished, the corporate says that every one Statsig staff will grow to be OpenAI staff. Nevertheless, the product testing startup will “proceed working independently and serving its buyer base out of its Seattle workplace,” the corporate mentioned of their weblog publish.
