President Donald Trump has introduced that the European Union and Mexico will face a 30% tariff on imports to the US from 1 August. He warned he would impose even greater import taxes if both of the US buying and selling companions determined to retaliate. The announcement was made in two letters posted on Trump’s Reality Social web site. Comparable letters have been despatched this week to a number of different international locations. The 27-member EU – America’s greatest buying and selling associate – stated earlier this week it hoped to agree a take care of Washington earlier than 1 August.Within the letter to European Fee President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump wrote: “Now we have had years to debate our buying and selling relationship with the European Union, and have concluded that we should transfer away from these long-term-large, and protracted, commerce deficits, engendered by your tariff, and non-tariff, insurance policies and commerce obstacles.””Our relationship has been, sadly, removed from reciprocal,” the letter added. The EU has been a frequent goal of Trump’s criticism, and in April Washington introduced levies of 20% on European items. In 2024, the US commerce deficit with the bloc was $235.6bn (€202bn; £174bn), based on the workplace of the US commerce consultant.Von der Leyen stated the EU remained prepared “to proceed working in the direction of an settlement by Aug 1″.”Few economies on this planet match the European Union’s stage of openness and adherence to truthful buying and selling practices,” her assertion added.”We are going to take all crucial steps to safeguard EU pursuits, together with the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required.”
